In response, Optus launched the Digital Thumbprint Programme to empower students and their families with essential knowledge and skills for safe online navigation. With Optus’ government-endorsed, free workshops and resources, the programme has reached over 620,000 students, helping them to achieve, thrive and belong in an ever-changing digital world.  Purpose and strategyOptus aims to “enable Australians to make positive connections,” a vision embodied in its Digital Thumbprint Programme. This initiative is dedicated to empowering young people and families to succeed in the digital world by equipping them with essential knowledge and practical tools to confront online risks. Through this effort, Optus is committed to creating a safe, connected community where youth can flourish and feel a sense of belonging.  In 2024, Optus expanded the programme to include resources for families, covering issues like scams and assessing children’s readiness for their first phone. Introducing these materials enhances Optus' reputation as a trusted digital safety provider, aligning with the company's broader sustainability goals.  Impact and innovationSince 2013, the Digital Thumbprint Programme has made a profound impact on Australian society. More than 620,000 students have participated in workshops, gaining essential knowledge about digital safety and wellbeing. The 2024 expansion, which introduced resources for families, has reached a media audience of 2.6 million Australians. The programme has successfully improved student awareness of online safety, with 92% of primary students and 8 in 10 secondary students reporting they now know where to seek help online.Additionally, the launch of the "Protecting Your Personal Information" programme in 2023 has helped educate over 10,000 students, with an impressive teacher Net Promoter Score of NPS74, far exceeding industry standards. Optus also embedded its ScamWise tool within the My Optus App, empowering customers to report suspicious texts and enhancing overall digital safety. With over 2 million calls and 2.8 million SMS blocked weekly, this integration demonstrates Optus’ commitment to creating a safer digital environment for all.  Future outlookOptus is committed to further expanding the reach and scope of its Digital Thumbprint Programme. Short-term plans include launching a dedicated AI workshop and resources addressing critical topics such as deep fake technology and tech-facilitated scams. Optus will also develop new generative AI resources for families, filling a crucial gap in the Australian market.  Looking ahead, Optus will continue to expand the programme's reach in support of the Singtel Group’s goal of reaching 1 million young people and families by 2025. With over 620,000 Australians already reached, Optus is well on its way to helping achieve this target. The company plans to continue scaling its digital delivery methods, deepening its national footprint and providing ongoing support to families and communities as they navigate the evolving digital landscape.
